Comparison Between Amanah Saham Nasional Berhad Funds

Amanah Saham Nasional Berhad (ASNB) is a wholly owned subsidiary of Permodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB). At the time of writing, ASNB managed nine funds. The latest fund is Amanah Saham 1Malaysia which was launched in August 2009.

Higher OPR & BLR for Malaysian

Following Bank Negara decision to increase the overnight policy rate (OPR) by 25 basis points last week, banks have begun to raise their base lending rates (BLRs). Bank Negara last week increase the OPR from 2% to 2.25%. Bank Negara raised the OPR as the economy has improved significantly and returned to its path to recovery.

So far BSN, Maybank, CIMB Bank, Public Bank, Hong Leong Bank, RHB Bank, Standard Chartered & HSBC announced their interest rate hike by 25 basis points from 5.55% to 5.8%. Other banks are expected to announce their decision soon. On the bright side, the increase in OPR & BLR also will result in increase in the interest gain from saving account, current account and fixed deposit.

EPF Declares 5.65 Percent Dividend for 2009

The Employees Provident Fund (EPF) has declared a dividend rate of 5.65 per cent for the financial year ended Dec 31, 2009. The dividend paid in 2009 is 1.15 percent higher than the amount paid in 2008. In 2008 the dividend rate was 4.5 percent. News on higher dividend for year 2009 was in mainstream media last October. In 2009, EPF make agreat achievement by securing highest ever net income at RM19.63 billion. This is 34.82 percent or RM14.56 billion higher than the amount recorded in 2008.

Gold or Fiat (Paper) Money

Today, the world is experimenting with a total fiat money system. That is, paper and electronic money that are not redeemable for gold or anything of value, unlike in the past. Accordingly, the world has observed countless economic and monetary crises worldwide, with the current global crisis being the latest and most severe since World War II.

The reason why the world adopted a total fiat monetary system was not grounded in economics but rather, in politics. Money, when not redeemable for gold, gives immense benefit to those who issue it and use it for the first time – that is the rationale for why counterfeiting is illegal. Today, most money is issued by commercial banks in the form of mere accounting entries when they give out loans, thereby enormously benefiting bankers from the first use of money that is created out of thin air.
