Investment Opportunity in Bank Persatuan

bank persatuan

Koperasi Bank Persatuan Malaysia Berhad or Bank Persatuan is a cooperative organization and it was established on 7th June 1950 under the name ‘The Province Wellesley Cooperative Banking Union Limited’ in Butterworth, Penang.

Bank Persatuan is in the process of upgrading their operation from credit cooperative to become second cooperative bank in Malaysia after Bank rakyat. They expected to become a cooperative bank by July 2010 after meeting the condition set by Bank Negara Malaysia. The main condition is to have RM300 million paid up capital.

In order to obtain the required paid up capital, Bank Persatuan open the membership to interested individual or co-operative. For the past 5 years, Bank Persatuan pays very attractive dividend to their members. Since 2004, they pay at least 10% dividend per year. This is a very good alternative for Bank Rakyat co-operative. Kindly browse ‘Historical Bank Persatuan Dividend Rate‘ page for previous year dividends.

For those who are interested to become a member, you have to register at any 13 branches of Bank Persatuan nationwide. You can find the address here. At the time of writing, the membership is still open to public.

The minimum investment for individual is RM500 and the maximum is RM10,000 as of 4th January 2010. For cooperative the maximum is RM50,000.00

During registration, you will be charged RM47.50 fee. The details are

  1. Takaful contribution – RM25.00
  2. Processing Fee – RM20.00
  3. Membership Card – RM2.50

However, please bear in mind that the investment money are not allowed to be withdrawed for a year.

  • Bank Persatuan declared and paid their dividend rather late every year. It is much later than Bank Rakyat.

I wonder whether during that interim period between January till the date of announcement and declaration of dividend whether the dividend be calculated / compounded for the next year dividend if not… there would a lengthy period of non dividend…..

    • Sorry Ray, I don’t know as I am not a member. However, if you max out your shares, they pay you dividend in cash, so basically no compounded dividend.

    Will be non dividend given.
For short period i.e less then 1 year, please go for FD or GIA. Dividend will be calculated monthly

  • Yes it took sooo long for them to actually pay the dividend .

I estimate overall time period required by the BP to pay the 10% Dividend is 18 months to 20 months.

That makes whatever dividend they announce somehow less attractive.

But the 10% is a good percentage. Bank like Maybank CIMB Publick bank should be able to pay more than that if they really want…

  • 1. There is potential for compounding return for those who haven’t maximised their investment. Like this year BP allows maximum RM10,000. As I haven’t use this BP immediately credited my dividend into my membership account.

    2. From my conversation with the staff, BP allows each member to withdraw once a year. But not to stop membership – this take 1 year. I wrote about this here – http://janganterlepaspandang.wordpress.com/2010/01/11/keluar_syer-bank_persatuan/

    3. Not sure about the length for their dividend (need to check). But, based on my own experience, I remembered BP always pay around the same time every year, after all annual meetings were concluded. Yes, all members are invited based on their membership opening branch/states.

    Hope these will be helpful.

  • KENAPA BANK PERSATUAN AMBIL MASA YANG SANGAT LAMA UNTUK BAYAR DIVIDEN TAHUNAN KEPADA AHLI,SEDANGKAN DIVIDEN DIKIRA BASE ON HGG DECEMBER MANAKALA DIVIDEN MULA DIBERI PADA OGOS TAHUN BERIKUTNYA-LAPAN BULAN LEWAT!!! DAN AMBIL MASA YANG LAMA JUGA (LENGAH-LENGAHKAN) UNTUK BAYAR BALIK DUIT JUAL BALIK SEBAHAGIAN SYER AHLI(TIDAK SEPERTI SAHAM-SAHAM LAIN, BILA BORANG DILENGKAPKAN UNTUK JUAL BALIK SYER – PROSESNYA SANGAT CEPAT,TERUS DAPAT DUIT YANG DIPERLUKAN). INI SEDIKIT SEBANYAK MENGHILANGKAN KEBOLEHPERCAYAAN PEMEGANG SAHAM BANK PERSATUAN TERHADAP KECEKAPANNYA BEROPERASI……. BANK YANG BERASASKAN ISLAM SEHARUSNYA CEKAP DAN MEMATUHI MASA (PENGHAYATAN SURAH WAL-ASRI…..)

    • We understand your concern but no need CAPS. 🙂

It’s true, the dividend distribution from BPSTN is taken too long. THus i dont think 10% p.a is applicable here. It’s more to 10% per 20mths. 😀

However, it’s still one of the best investment vehicle available (with prev 10% p.a history, but 6.5% last year is quite worrying).

  • mariam awang & SM, If you think carefully you lose only for the first year. For subsequent years, you will get a dividend after a year, so no more lose.

    Reply
  • 1MDB, it’s annually i think. because the distribution is in Aug (ie Aug 2011) every year but the dividend is calculated up to Dec in prev year (Dec 2010). So every year we lost 8-mths dividend. Also the compounding effect.

    Reply
  • SM, yes dividend is normally in August.

    This is how I think.

Example, in 2010 you invest in January & you earn dividend in early August 2011. They way I think is, the 2010 dividend is from the period of August 2010 to July 2011. So you only lose 8 months of dividend in the first year only. Subsequent years you should not lose anything.

  • 1MDB,

The dividend is from the period of Jan – Dec every year. Its only paid in Aug.

  • SM, I understand, but if you think this way, you actually only lose 1 time.

  • Lately the performance is not good, only 6.5% dividend. Slightly better than epf.

I have nothing against BP but they really take too long to credit the dividend.
Even bank rakyat also infected with this disease in the name of having to convene AGM whatever..

however bank rakyat payout is very very good, it worth the wait. So if pay very low must make it very fast BP. :))
